Advanced Practice Nurses (APNs) at UVA are masters prepared, nationally certified clinicians who manage the care of a defined patient population.

RN New Graduate/Nurse Residency Program

UVA Health is committed to the professional development of every new graduate nurse and is ready to invest in your clinical practice as you establish your nursing career. The Nurse Residency Program (NRP) provides you with generous, protected orientation time specific to each practice setting. Experienced Preceptors and Nursing Education Coordinators tailor the program to meet your individual needs. In addition to your clinical orientation, regular meetings with other new graduate nurses allow you to learn and develop together. The program supports new ADN, BSN and MSN (second degree, new nurse) graduate nurses during their first 12 months as they transition to their first professional role as an RN.

The NRP focuses on three areas critical to nursing practice including leadership, patient outcomes, and the professional role of a nurse. Throughout the first year of practice, monthly classes are provided to enhance your clinical orientation by providing evidence-based content essential to developing clinicians, peer discussion about transition-to-practice issues, and dialogue with UVA content experts to support your clinical knowledge. Every new graduate nurse immediately becomes a member of the Professional Nursing Staff Organization (PNSO).  UVA Health's PNSO enables nurses to establish their own professional standards of clinical practice and professional development. As a UVA nurse, you have access to innovative programs that foster continued education, training, and professional advancement.
